Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to see the oral surgeon?

In most cases, a referral is not required to see Dr. McGann. The most common visit you don’t need a referral for is wisdom teeth extractions. If you have a bad tooth that needs to be extracted, you are missing a tooth and want it replaced with an implant, or have changes in your tissue that you concerned about, you are welcome to reach out and schedule a visit with us. For extractions related to your orthodontics, or if we will be helping your dentist do a lot of restorations in your mouth, we will require a written referral to ensure we come up with a plan that helps them achieve their big picture plan for you.

Do you take my insurance?

We are in network with the following insurance providers: Aetna Dental & Medical PPO, Ameritas PPO, Anthem Blue Cross Dental PPO, Blue Shield of CA Dental PPO, Careington PPO, Cigna Dental & Medical PPO, Delta Dental PPO and Premier, Dentemax PPO, GEHA Dental PPO, Guardian PPO, Humana Dental PPO, MetLife PPO, Principal PPO, Sun Life PPO, United Concordia, and United Healthcare Dental. If you don’t see your plan listed but have a PPO, please call our office so we can verify the information for you. Most PPO plans provide out-of-network benefits and to allow lowest and best out of pocket costs.

What does an oral surgeon do?

An oral and maxillofacial surgeon specializes in diagnosing and treating conditions involving the teeth, jaws, face, and mouth. Common procedures include wisdom teeth removal, dental implants, bone grafting, tooth extractions, and sedation dentistry. At Dr. McGann’s San Diego oral surgery office, we provide personalized surgical care focused on comfort, safety, and long-term oral health.

Is oral surgery painful?

Patient comfort is one of our highest priorities. We offer several anesthesia and sedation options to help make oral surgery as comfortable and stress-free as possible. Most patients report minimal discomfort during the procedure and manageable soreness afterward.

What should I expect during my oral surgery consultation?

During your consultation, Dr. McGann will review your medical history, examine your teeth and jaw, discuss treatment options, and answer your questions. Digital imaging may be taken to help create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs. You will also get an estimate for your out-of-pocket cost from our treatment coordinators before you leave.

What can I eat after my extraction?

While we may ask you to restrict your food before surgery, once you are done with your procedure, you are welcome to eat whatever you are comfortable with. Most people prefer softer foods like pasta, mashed potatoes, smoothies, and soups, since they are easier to eat, but there are no food restrictions after. When you are numb, you can’t feel temperature so just be careful to not burn your mouth.

How long does wisdom teeth recovery take?

Most patients recover within a few days to one week following wisdom teeth removal. Swelling and mild discomfort are common during the first 48–72 hours and gradually improve. Following post-operative instructions carefully helps promote faster healing.

How much does wisdom teeth removal cost in San Diego?

The cost of wisdom teeth removal depends on factors such as the number of teeth removed, the complexity of the procedure, and the type of sedation used. Our office strives to provide transparent pricing and treatment estimates for patients with or without dental insurance.

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

Most healthy adults with missing teeth may qualify for dental implants. Candidates should have healthy gums and adequate bone support, although bone grafting procedures may help patients who have experienced bone loss.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are titanium posts placed into the jawbone to replace missing teeth roots. Once healed, they support crowns, bridges, or dentures that look and function like natural teeth.

How long do dental implants last?

With proper care and regular dental visits, dental implants can last for many years and often decades. Good oral hygiene and avoiding smoking can help improve long-term success.

Are dental implants painful?

Dental implant surgery is generally very well tolerated. Local anesthesia and sedation options help keep patients comfortable during the procedure. Most patients describe the recovery as easier than expected.
